Turning 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period

Your Initial Enrollment Period usually lasts 7 months. It starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after it.

In most cases, if you sign up in the months before your birthday month, your Part A and Part B coverage can start on the first day of your birthday month.

If you miss this window and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period, from January 1 to March 31, and you may pay a late enrollment penalty.

Manuel can walk you through Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement options, in English or Spanish.

You may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period, from January 1 to March 31, and you may pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B. Some people qualify for a Special Enrollment Period instead.
