What a Medigap policy does
Original Medicare covers a lot, but you still pay costs like deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, helps pay some of those costs.
You generally need Medicare Part A and Part B to buy one, and it works with Original Medicare, not with a Medicare Advantage plan.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts 6 months and starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During that time, insurance companies can’t turn you down or charge you more because of health problems.
After that window, you may not be able to buy the policy you want, or it may cost more. That is why the timing is worth talking through.
